Traveling Through the Washington Corridor
As of right now, two buses are in operation, but even so large corporate groups can utilize the Wave. Groups should send an e-mail to info@thehoustonwave.com in advance and let the Wave know when and where they would like to be picked up. The staff uses Sprint/Nextel devices to communicate with the drivers of each bus, making it possible to pinpoint the location of each vehicle, minimizing wait time for groups. There are no guarantees for this personalized service, but at the time of this writing, every group that has contacted the Wave has been able to be accommodated. This is perfect for groups of visiting professionals who don’t know there way around the city and need user-friendly transportation to enjoy the nightlife.

In fact, the Wave has become a go-to resource of sorts for visitors of the city looking for the best possible Houston experience. “We get call and e-mails by the dozen now from visitors to Houston not knowing where they should go for the best dance venue or hotel or mac and cheese,” says Barrush. “They somehow are hearing about the Wave and that is their starting point for the rest of their trips.”

During recent months, the Wave has seen a steady increase in riders. On any given weekend, it’s projected that the jitney keeps close to 200 cars off the road. Thanks to a close relationship with the city of Houston, the Wave has been able to receive immense support from law enforcement and officials. The Wave’s team members have even been asked to be on a few of the city’s off-site parking and mobility advisory boards. In a broader context, the Wave is par t of a growing movement to provide Houstonians with safe and effective transportation alternatives. In fact, Barrush reports that one evening a group of firefighters rode the Wave and upon exiting, one said, “We had a great time, but please know that at the end of the day, you truly are saving lives.”

Pretty soon, the Washington Wave may have to be renamed in order to encompass all the areas it services. The Washington Wave has recently expanded to include Midtown, the Heights and Rice Village. Beginning October 1st, the Wave will also reach downtown. Plans are in development to also incorporate Upper Kirby and Upper Shepherd. “Our plan is to make Houston more connected, more moveable, and more user friendly,” Barrash says. It’s certainly an exciting prospect. If the new routes are approved, then the Washington Wave would service all of the major nightlife locations within the Loop.
