Meetings & Events Houston Hosts 2012 Fall Event for 250 Industry Professionals at the House of Dereon Media Center
For Immediate Release:
Meetings & Events Houston held a recent event at the House of Deréon Media Center located in the Midtown area of Houston. This state-of-the-art media and conference center is an ultra-exclusive, eclectic special events venue offering 4,300 square feet of space on two levels for hosting intimate parties or larger festive events. A creation of Tina Knowles, the House of Deréon Media Center once housed tour stages, wardrobe and merchandising for Destiny’s Child, the “Greatest Female Group of All Time.”

Although each Meetings & Events Houston event has a different theme, the goal remains the same: to connect meeting planner clients with hospitality suppliers and industry professionals. Organized by Meeting Planner Resources’ Event Planner and Privilege Program Director Cecile Ruffino and Texas Regional Sales Director Stephanie Olmstead, the event on November 15 brought approximately 250 event planners, hospitality vendors and industry professionals together, once again proving that the local event-planning industry and Meetings & Events Houston are flourishing in 2012.

Plus, to help promote the future of the industry, Meeting Planner Resources welcomed the help of a group of interns studying hospitality management through cooperation with Dr. Jason Draper of the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston. Under the supervision of Ruffino, the students—Angela Corredor, Hillary Davidson, Yawen He and Jessica Howton—helped prepare and facilitate the event to gain experience in this exciting field. “We are excited to expand our internship program with the Conrad N. Hilton College and look forward to working with a new group on our May event,” says Ruffino.

“At every event, Meeting Planner Resources selects a local nonprofit organization to support,” says Carlo van der Burg, publisher for Meetings & Events Houston. The proceeds raised through a raffle of prizes generously donated by many industry leaders always go to aid a charitable cause. For this event, Meetings & Events Houston selected the Houston Food Bank, a network of 500 food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers and other agencies that annually provides 50 million nutritious meals to those in need. This event raised nearly $450 to contribute to the Houston Food Bank’s ongoing mission.

“The Houston Food Bank is grateful for community friends who help us feed 137,000 individuals each week who struggle to keep food on the table,” remarks Brian Greene, president and CEO of the Houston Food Bank. “Meetings & Events Houston’s gift will provide nearly 1,300 meals for hungry people. We’re grateful for their help in the fight against hunger.”

“This event’s partners included AV2Go, Bright Star Productions, The Ensemble Theatre, Fox and Hound, Girls Only: The Secret Comedy of Women, La Torretta Lake Resort & Spa, Main Street Theater, Nos Caves Vin and Water2Wine,” says Ruffino. “All of them made very generous raffle donations, and because of that we were able to raise enough money to help the Houston Food Bank further its mission to feed those truly in need.”

Meetings & Events Houston gives special thanks to its sponsors that made the evening possible with their generous contributions to make the event a wonderful success. Joie Dé Linen supplied table linens for the event. Catering was provided by Berryhill Catering, Brennan’s of Houston, Dolce Delights, Haven, Hungry’s Café & Bistro and Sparrow Bar + Cookshop, home of celebrity chef Monica Pope. Plus, Fords Bartending supplied the bartending services, alcohol and glasses while Silver Eagle Distributors provided the night’s beer and wine selections. “We feel that our sponsors are an excellent example of the quality and variety of vendors that meeting planners in the Houston region can choose from,” says Olmstead. “We are excited to bring together all of our partners with the thousands of business professionals in the Houston region that are in the midst of planning many of their holiday events.”

Moreover, visitors to the event had a great time and enjoyed themselves. Cindy E. Rodriguez, event coordinator for the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, comments, “The venue, people, food and beverages, swag bags and prizes were great. I truly enjoyed myself and made some good connections.” Steve Oprea of InfoVine Inc. agreed, saying, “I had a lovely time last night and made some good contacts.”
